Carl Wang

Born and raised in Beijing, China, Carl spent his formative years in the United States, attending high school in Colorado and college in upstate New York. He graduated from Hamilton College in December 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in Literature and French and Francophone Studies (with Honors). Already spent a year studying abroad at Reid Hall as an undergraduate, Carl is more than thrilled to be back in Paris this year as a HiLi student. Interested in Irish and French literature, Carl wrote his undergraduate thesis on James Joyce’s Ulysses, specifically charting the (arrested) development of Stephen Dedalus and his growing incompatibility with the Dublin milieu, or even with the novel itself. For his master's thesis, by examining the staging of memory in Beckett's late dramatic works, Carl aims to show how the playwright, in a manner similar to Derrida, deconstructs the absence/presence binary and challenges the very notion of a positively defined subject "I."
